Nigerian man indicted in plot to blow up plane

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, tried to destroy the plane by injecting
chemicals into a package of pentrite explosive concealed in his underwear,
authorities say.

The failed attack caused popping sounds and flames that passengers and crew
rushed to extinguish.

Brown calls London summit on Yemen

Brown will host the event in London on 28 January. The high-level meeting will
be held in parallel with an international conference on Afghanistan the same
day.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian who says he was trained by
al Qaeda in Yemen, is accused of trying to blow up a US passenger jet as it
approached Detroit on Christmas Day.

After two months in a camp, the family returned to their village in Buner
district, but their lives remain shattered. “We are all living in one
room, I don’t have the money to rebuild any more of the house,” said
Sher Ahmed. “I used to sell milk from our cow and hire out my horse and
cart, but my animals were also killed. Now and then I can earn about 250
rupees [less than £2] a day unloading goods in the market.”
